Cambridge C1 Advanced: THE TEST
Reading and Use of English / Duration:1 hour 30 minutes
Content: 8 parts/ 56 questions
Shows you can deal confidently with different types of text, such as fiction, newspapers and magazines. Tests your use of English with different types of exercises that show how well you can control your grammar and vocabulary.
Writing: 1 hour 30 minutes
Content: 2 parts
You create two different pieces of writing, such as essays, letters/emails, proposals, reports and reviews.
Listening / Duration: 40 minutes
Content: 4 parts/30 questions
Tests your ability to follow and understand a range of spoken materials, such as interviews, radio broadcasts, presentations, talks and everyday conversations.

For students who are doing the Junior Cycle English exam, we work with you to develop your knowledge of language and literature. We encourage all students to be creative through your use of language and to enjoy the English language in all its forms. We work with students to develop your understanding of grammar and the conventions of English so that YOU, as students, can communicate clearly, effectively and creatively in English. We work with you to develop control over your use of English and your ability to engage with, and think critically about, the wide range of spoken, written and multimodel texts at Junior Cycle level.
Getting through the Leaving Cert can be a difficult time for families. It is a busy and demanding two years not only for your son or daughter but for the wider family also. Below is a little background information on the exam and what your son or daughter must prepare for. THE LEAVING CERT: EXAMINATIONS
Students take the exam at either Higher Level or Ordinary Level. At both Higher Level and Ordinary Level there will be two papers, i.e. English I and English II. There is an equal allocation of marks to each paper.
English I
This paper is specifically aimed at testing the comprehending and composing abilities of students. The paper consists of one or more texts. A variety of texts will be used, e.g. a report, an argument, a poem, a picture, a story extract etc.
Leaving Certificate English Higher and Ordinary Level students will be required to answer a number of comprehension questions, fulfill a functional writing task, and write an extended composition in a specific genre.
In the composition students will be expected to demonstrate clearly their engagement with and understanding of the original text(s), reveal their own coherent, evaluative response to the text(s), and put forward their own view in a particular written genre.
The text(s) and the questions at Higher Level and at Ordinary Level will be set at a standard appropriate to the ability of the candidates concerned.
English II
This paper will test students' knowledge of and response to a range of texts. There will be Three Sections on this Paper.
SECTION A: In-depth study of a text.
There will be a question on each text designated for the course.
There will be options within each question.
* Students must answer one question.
SECTION B: Comparative study
There will be questions on two of the modes of comparison prescribed for the specific course.
There will be options within each question.

SECTION C: Poetry
At Higher Level:
An unseen poem
A general question on one of the prescribed poets
At Ordinary Level:
An unseen poem
(ii) Two questions on prescribed poetry. One question will be on an Ordinary Level poem by a prescribed Higher Level poet. One question will be on a prescribed Ordinary Level poem.
